ASTM A354 — Grade BD & BC Bolts and Studs
High-strength alloy bolts and studs, in sizes the SAE grades don’t reach. Grade BD is the one you’ll usually see called out.
ASTM A354 covers quenched and tempered alloy-steel bolts, studs and threaded rod from ¼″ up to 4″. It comes in two grades: BC and the stronger BD. BD has about the same strength as SAE Grade 8, but in diameters well past Grade 8’s 1½″ limit.
Covers
Bolts, studs & rod, ¼–4″
Identify by
“BD” or “BC” on the head or stud end
Typical use
High-strength anchors, studs & heavy equipment
Strength by grade and size
| Grade & size | Yield | Tensile | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|
| BD ¼–2½″ | 130 | 150 | HRC 33–39 |
| BD over 2½–4″ | 115 | 140 | HRC 31–39 |
| BC ¼–2½″ | 109 | 125 | HRC 26–36 |
| BC over 2½–4″ | 99 | 115 | HRC 22–33 |
Where you’ll see it
A354 BD shows up where a design needs Grade 8 strength in a big diameter — high-strength anchor rods and studs, equipment hold-downs, and heavy machinery. It runs with A563 Grade DH or A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts.
Galvanizing Grade BD. Hot-dip galvanizing very hard steel carries a risk of hydrogen embrittlement, and many engineers won’t allow galvanized BD. If your job calls for galvanized high-strength bolts, ask us before ordering.
How to spot it
Look for “BD” (or “BC”) and the manufacturer’s mark stamped on the bolt head, or on the end of a stud or rod. When in doubt, ask for the mill certs — A354 parts are often sold with them.
