ASTM A449 — Quenched & Tempered Bolts and Studs
Grade 5 strength in the ASTM world — and in sizes up to 3″. A common call-out for anchor bolts and general structural work.
ASTM A449 covers quenched and tempered steel bolts, studs and threaded rod for general engineering use, ¼″ to 3″. In the smaller sizes it lines up closely with SAE Grade 5; its strength steps down as the diameter goes up.

Where you’ll see it
A449 is a go-to call-out for anchor bolts and studs and general structural bolting when a project needs more than A307 but not the alloy strength of A354 BD. It can be hot-dip galvanized, which makes it common on outdoor and foundation work.
How to spot it
Parts are marked with “A449” and the manufacturer’s mark. Hex cap screws are often marked with three radial lines — the same mark as SAE Grade 5 — so check the paperwork when the spec matters. Pair with an A563 heavy hex nut of the grade your spec calls for.
